FORD x GOOGLE MAPS

PEOPLE WANT TO GO OFF-ROADING, THEY JUST DON’T KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE IT.

A third of Americans own an off-road-capable SUV. But fewer than 2% ever leave the pavement.

For most people, off-roading feels like a gamble.

Trails are rough and unpredictable.

And while GPS tools exist, they’re built for paying, hardcore hobbyists – not everyday drivers. Most don’t know where to start, how to plan or what to expect once the road ends.

SO WE ASKED:

WHY CAN’T NAVIGATING THE OFF-ROAD BE AS SIMPLE AS USING GOOGLE MAPS?

What if it could help us navigate the off-road with confidence?

So Ford and Google Maps teamed up to do something that had never been done before.

Over 32 days and 5,900 miles, a convoy led by the Ford Bronco carried Google’s Street View camera across the entire TransAmerica Trail – the longest off-road route in the U.S. – crossing deserts, mountains and backcountry roads across 13 states.

For the first time, anyone can digitally preview and navigate America’s longest off-road trail with the same confidence they would a city street.

And every mile captured now doubles as a permanent, interactive billboard, forever capturing Ford’s off-road capability on Google Maps.

THEN, WE INSPIRED TO EXPLORE THE TRAIL.
